W e suggest that you check out the most visited attraction of the city: the Santa Barbara Castle perched on the top of Monte Benacantil. In its exhibition rooms and spaces you can get to know the history of one of the largest medieval fortresses in Spain from which you can also appreciate the delightful view of the bay of Alicante. The opening hours of the castle are from 10:00 to 20:00 during the winter season and from 10:00 to 22:00 in the summer. Stroll through the streets that maintain a traditional vibe like those in the Santa Cruz area which is one of the prettiest and quintessential neighbourhoods of Alicante situated at the heart of the old town. If you take a walk through this area you can visit the Contemporary Art Museum (MACA), the Gravina Art Museum (MUBAG), the Town Hall and archaeological site, known as The Uncovered City, in the adjoining building. Also, don’t miss the Co-cathedral of San Nicholas de Bari and its wonderful XV Century cloister. Close by you will find the oldest religious structure in Alicante, the Basilica of Santa Maria . It’s a building in the Gothic style and stands out for its beautiful façade, while inside you will find a stunning Valencian Baroque organ dated 1653. Next to the Basilica runs Calle Villavieja, a lovely street with artisan shops. To end the route, go to the Explanada, one of the most popular promenades of the city , made with 6,600,000 marble blocks in three colours forming a mosaic of waves. A VISIT IN ALICANTE
