You can easily get to nearby Santurtzi . The sardines from these parts have gone beyond simple cuisine to become the stuff of legend. In fact, the sardine sellers or ‘las sardineras' as they are known, used to walk the 15 kilometres to Bilbao barefoot, carrying their basket of sardines wrapped in rough salt. Eating them baked on a barbecue is an authentic delight that you should be sure not to miss. c ross the Vizcaya Bridge to discover the right bank, which you can also reach by metro. Over there you will find the districts Las Arenas and Neguri , where the Basque elite chose to locate their magnificent residences. If you would like to find out more about these residences, the LasArenas Dock , that runs around the Abra Bay, lets you get close to the architectural beauty of these buildings, with helpful information points along the route. At one point around the bay, you will come across the Puerto Deportivo (Leisure Port), with its many bars and restaurants. Nearby, you will see the beach known as Playa de Ereaga and, at the far end of the beach, another of the many places that the people of Bilbao come to enjoy themselves: the Puerto Viejo de Algorta (Old Port of Algorta, Getxo). The area is popular, with many locals coming to spend the summer months. In fact, as with many coastal towns, it is mainly a residential area. Be sure to capture the charm and beauty of the small fishermen's houses with your camera. And of course, you can stop here to taste a few of the pintxos on offer and then carry on to Plentzia , another of the places that the locals chose to come and stroll and enjoy a day at the beach. In this beautiful fishing town, you can wander along the banks of the Ría right up to its mouth and watch the small fishing boats used by the locals who set sail in search of txipiron.
