Perched 72m above sea level, this fortress was built in the 14 th century to defend Cabrera from attacks by pirates and corsairs. To give the alert, the lookouts would light a fire on the tower to warn the lighthouse- keeper of sa Ràpita. The castle has been declared a Historical-Artistic Monument.

C abrera es un archipiélago situado al sudeste de Ma- llorca formado por 18 islas e islotes, declarado Parque Nacional Marítimo-Terrestre en 1991, tras una intensa campaña popular que lo salvó de la urbanización. Protege 10.000 hectáreas de territorio, la mayoría sumergidas, y se visita contratando una excursión con alguna de las empresas que cubren el trayecto desde la Colònia de Sant Jordi. En verano, las excursiones se realizan diariamente, de lunes a domingo, y comprenden un día entero (por lo general, de 10 a 17 h). El trayecto suele durar unos 35 minutos. El desembarco se realiza en la isla de Cabrera, y los guías del servicio de Interpretación del Parque Nacional informan a los visitantes sobre los dife- rentes itinerarios que se pueden realizar: subida al Castillo, visita al Monumento a los Franceses y al Museo “Es Celler”, y baño opcional en las playas de sa Plageta o s’Espalmador. A la hora indicada, la em- barcación parte rumbo a sa Cova Blava, donde entra—si el tiempo lo permite— para que los pasajeros puedan tomar un baño en su interior. Tras esta pausa se inicia el regreso al puerto de la Colònia de Sant Jordi. Para comer, los visitantes pueden llevar su propio almuerzo—detrás de la playa hay una zona habilitada con mesas y bancos– o bien optar por alguno de los menús que ofrecen las embarcaciones que realizan las excursiones.

Cabrera is an archipelago located to the south-east of Mallorca and comprised of 18 islands and islets, declared a National Maritime-Terrestrial Park in 1991, after an intense popular campaign which saved it from urbanization. It protects 10,000 hectares of territory, most of which are underwater, and it can be vis- ited on excursions run by the companies that make the passage from Colònia de Sant Jordi. In summer, there are boat trips every day, from Monday to Sunday, lasting a whole day (generally speaking from 10 am to 5 pm). The crossing usually takes around 35 minutes. Passengers alight on the island of Cabrera, and the guides from the National Park Interpretation service inform visitors of the different itineraries available: a walk up to the castle, a visit to the monument to the French and the “Es Celler” museum, and the option of a swim on the beaches of sa Plageta or s’Espalmador. At the given time, the boat leaves for sa Cova Blava (the blue cave), where it enters – if time permits – so that passengers can swim inside the cave. After this pause, the boat begins the voyage back to the port of Colònia de Sant Jordi. Visitors can take their own lunch – set back from the beach there is a picnic area with benches and tables – or choose one of the set menus offered by the boats that make the trips to the island.

Ubicado en una antigua bodega o celler, acoge una exposición perma- nente de elementos relacio- nados con el parque. En sus inmediaciones, un jardín botá- nico muestra la riqueza vege- tal del archipiélago. Museum of Cabrera. Located in an old wine cellar or celler , the museum has a permanent exhibition of elements re- lated to the park. Nearby a botanical garden shows the wealth of plant life on the archipelago.
