P alma es una ciudad dejado su impronta, sobre todo árabes —que la llamaronMadinaMayurqa—y cristianos, que conquistaron la isla en 1229. El centro histórico conserva un marcado trazadomedieval, y lamejor manera de recorrerloes partiendode la imponente Catedral deMallorca, conocida como LaSeu, el mejormirador sobre la grandiosa bahía dePalma. La Catedral es un edificio gótico que atesora intervenciones artísticas de diversos siglos y se enorgullece de poseer el mayor rosetón original de las catedrales europeas de este estilo, conocido como el Ojo del Gótico, con casi 100 m 2 de superficie y más de 1.200 cristales de colores. Bajo la vieja muralla se encuentra ses Voltes, recinto militar transforma- do en espacio escénico y expositivo, y el parc de la Mar, pulmón urbano muy concurrido por la gente local. Junto al templo se yergue el Palacio de la Almudaina, antiguo palacio árabe, posteriormente cristianizado y refor- mado, delimitado en la parte marítima por la muralla que protegía la ciudad. Palma is a monumental city which has lived facing the sea from the mo- ment it was conceived, and as a result diverse cultures have arrived here and left their mark, above all the Arabs –who called the city Madina Mayurqa– and then Christians, who conquered the island in 1229. The historic city centre still retains its medieval layout, and the best way of seeing it is by set- ting off from the imposing cathedral, known as the Seu de Mallorca, the finest vantage point there is overlook- ing the magnificent Bay of Palma. The Cathedral is a Gothic building which houses artistic interventions from different centuries and prides it- self on having the largest original rose window of all the European cathedrals in this style, known as the ‘ Gothic Eye ’ , with a surface area of nearly 100 m 2 and comprised of over 1,200 stained glass windows. Below the ancient city wall lie ses Voltes, a former military enclosure which has been turned into a space for exhibitions and performances, and the parc de la Mar, an extremely popular green lung frequented by local people. Next to the church stands the Almudaina Palace, once an Arab palace but later Christianised and renovated, delimited on the sea side by the wall that used to protect the city.
