El Cant de la Sibil·la. Por No- chebuena, durante la misa de maitines, se interpreta en la Seu este canto del s. XIII en el que se profetiza el findelmundo. Decla- rado Patrimonio Inmaterial de la Humanidad por la Unesco. The chant of the Sybil. This 13 th - century chant which proph- esies the end of the world is performed on Christmas Eve, during midnight mass (maiti- nes), in the cathedral. It has been declared Intangible Cul- tural Heritage by UNESCO. Paseo por la muralla. Un reco- rrido que transcurre siempre junto al mar por los tramos res- taurados de la antigua muralla que antaño protegía la ciudad de Palma. Stroll along the wall. A walk that runs on the seafront along the restored stretches of the ancient city wall which used to protect Palma.

At its feet the gardens of Hort del Rei stretch out, with water features, benches where one can sit and enjoy the atmosphere and Joan Miró. These gardens connect to the central passeig des Born, a boulevard presided over by two stone sphinxes and flanked by trees, and a lively shopping area which leads up to the street of avinguda de Jaume III , where you will find boutiques selling the top brands in clothes and accessories and a department store. In the nearby plaça de Weyler stands the Gran Hotel, one of the most impor- tant examples there are of Modernism, now converted into an exhibition space. Beside the Teatre Principal –which has an excellent cultural programme all year round– some steps lead up to the plaça Major, a large square with porticoes where shopping streets like Sant Miquel, Sindi- cat and Colón converge. This latter road connects to plaça de Cort , the administra- tive heart of the city, presided over by the city hall and the seat of the Consell de Mallorca, or island council, a good exam- ple of the Mallorcan Neo-Gothic style. The surrounding area contains the church of Sant Francesc –a Gothic

esculturas de artistas como Subirachs o Joan Miró. Estos jardines conectan con el céntrico passeig des Born, bulevar encabezado por dos esfinges de piedra y flanqueado por árboles, animada zona co- mercial que desemboca en la avinguda de Jaume III, donde se encontrarán tiendas de primeras marcas de ropa, complemen- tos y unos grandes almacenes. En la cercana plaça deWeyler se levan- ta el Gran Hotel, una de las muestras más importantes del Modernismo, convertido en un espacio expositivo. Junto al Teatre Principal —con excelente programación cultural durante todo el año—unas escaleras desembocan en la plaça Major, amplia plaza porticada donde convergen calles comerciales como Sant Miquel, Sindicat y Colón. Esta última conecta con la plaza de Cort, corazón administrativo de la ciudad, presidida por el Ayunta- miento y la sede del Consell de Mallorca, buena muestra del neogótico mallorquín.

Un día en las carreras. En el Hipódromo de Son Pardo se ce- lebran carreras de trotones, ca- rros de dos ruedas tirados por caballos al trote. En las noches de verano se puede cenar junto a las pistas de competición. A day at the races. Son Pardo racetrack is the venue for trotting races, two-wheeled carts pulled at a trot by hors- es. On summer nights you can have dinner beside the racetrack itself.
