IMPORTANT CELEBRATIONS

COMMEMORATION OF THE FOURTH CENTENARY OF THE BIRTH OF THE PAINTER BARTOLOME ESTEBAN MURILLO IN SEVILLE (2017- 2018). To celebrate the birth of Seville’s great painter Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, a series of cultural activities will take place in December 2017 and throughout 2018. Rarely have a painter and a city achieved such a degree of mutual identification as that reached by Murillo and Seville. And not just because of the incidental fact that the painter was born in the Guadalquivir’s capital, but because his art sprang from the most intimate roots of local culture. Because of this, his painting enjoyed success at the time and his work received the subsequent recognition given both within Spain and by foreign publics and critics, making him an undisputed figure of international calibre. Exhibitions, concerts, workshops, publications, Murillo itineraries through the city and restoration of some of his works are some of the activities that will be organized and which will give us the opportunity to fully explore Murillo and his work. www.murilloysevilla.org

FIRST CIRCUMNAVIGATION OF THE WORLD. The Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan launched the Spanish expedition that completed the first journey around the world. The expedition, consisting of five ships with 250 men on board and with Magellan in command of the fleet put to sea on 10 August 1519 from the Muelle de las Mulas in Seville. On the death of Magellan, the expedition continued under the command of Juan Sebastián Elcano. They arrived in Spain, specifically in Seville, in 1522. Of the five ships that departed only one, the Victoria, completed the journey around the world, and only 18 sailors returned. The Fifth Centenary of the First Circumnavigation of the World will be commemorated in 2019.
